I'm currently using DuckDuckGo, and I've used Qwant in the past. It might be a good idea to abandon DDG, as I've heard of it's association with Microsoft. I have used Wiby before, and I was very impressed with it. I found a lot of cool, personal web pages.
The forum seems like a good place to get a basic idea of what search engines to look at, and which ones to look out for. The Seirdy article looks very informative, but I'll have to wait until I have to time to really dig deep into it.

I use the Disroot SearX Instance, SearX pulls results from loads of different search engines through a proxy. Duckduckgo apparently has some shady dealings going on behind the scenes and while using that is certainly better than Google, I’d still be weary.

Here is a THread I did originally for Yesterweb. I loved some of those sites when you originally posted them and bookmarked several. I really feel that the "main" search engines failed to assume the responsibility of facilitating clear and easy access to personal sites, and a couple of those make it their mission to help with that. It's had me thinking about attempting my own high-quality directory of personal sites. For general web searches, I prefer DuckDuckGo, even bearing in mind that they work with Microsoft. Their promise is that they don't track users, and so far I've found no disproof of that. It's also light-feeling, and they provide some good features, like easily-recallable themes, and products like easily-disposable e-mail addresses.

Like Starfia, I might actually try subscribing a month and trying my best to only search stuff when I *need* to. (Ray – I just realized you'd addressed me on Blog's linked Yesterweb thread and asked how I manage my bookmarks, but I'm guessing you meant be replying to Rynn. Not that I don't have an organized collection of perhaps 200 bookmarks.)

Quick question: do you use the search engine's app on your phone, or is it better to use Firefox or another browser app?

I think it would be a good idea to do a 1-3 day trial run with each search engine, and see which one is best for me.

I'll have to explore it a bit more, but I just found out about Marginalia Search. It looks promising.
