Sort of a vague question, and forgive me if this isn't really the right board for this, but I've been thinking of implementing a blog on my site but I wasn't sure what the most efficient way to go about it was. I've tried Zonelets, and I think it's a great tool but I'm not sure if I like how isolated it feels, I think I'd rather have a blog sort of within my site, more cohesive with the rest of the layout and design, etc. On the other hand, I've heard a lot of talk of Dreamwidth, InsaneJournal, and I just heard about Diaryland. My only real experience with actual blogging about thoughts and life was wayyy back in the day when LJ and Blogger were still viable, and Tumblr, which quickly became, well, Tumblr. This is separate from site updates - I'm talking about more personal stuff. I kinda just wanna put in a spot to talk about video games and anime, lol. So, if you blog at all, what's your preferred way of doing so, and what would to recommend doing vs not doing? Just another HTML page on your website, or is embedding something more efficient? Please share your methods!

The blog on my website is just raw HTML, one page per day. Hyperlinks within each of those pages allow one to go back-and-forth through the days, and there is a main page organized by month and year that has links to all of the pages. It is not the most elegant solution, but if that is something that you would like to do, my humble recommendations are: 1. Have a blank template that you can easily repeat every day 2. Carefully plan out the navigation beforehand so that you won't have to edit a bunch of pages if something goes awry

I use both Dreamwidth and just raw HTML and they're both great for different reasons! I feel like there's no limit with raw HTML. It can be whatever you want it to be! But I definitely recommend Dreamwidth if you used to have an LJ and enjoyed that experience. You definitely have to go looking for community on Dreamwidth-- I was surprised to find some fandom communities that are still alive from LJ. There is this recent post for newbies (specifically for fleeing Redditors) that's pretty helpful. It's also pretty easy just to keep to yourself on Dreamwidth. I also use it as a private journal.
A few other places I've come across but haven't tried yet are Bear Blog and Smol Pub. They seem pretty interesting!

Hi, Reala! I've just checked out your site β your blog looks lovely at first glance and I look forward to perusing it. I've always paid for a domain name and minimal hosting, and back in the day, I used to post to LiveJournal and then used a PHP program I found to display those posts on my site, and that was before I even really understood what PHP was and how to use it. I'm thankful to whoever wrote it β it reminds me of what Zonelets is now, and it sufficed for the time. Eventually I did learn how to use PHP myself, and I imagined a basic interface for writing and publishing without the need for any third-party service. Years later, I implemented that and have been using it since. Here it is: stevebarnes.org/blog/contents

If you like Zonelets, why not incorporate it within your site? That's what I did. You can check out my site to see that in action.

DivergentRays β For whatever reason I hadn't previously seen your site, but it looks lovely. I shall bookmark. Isn't the point of Zonelets to copy and paste the code into your own project? How would Zonelets work if not "incorporated within a site"?

I've seen people use the Zonelets all by itself, so that it's THE website, not just a part of one. I thought that might be what reala was talking about when they said Zonelets felt isolated. If that's all a site is, just the blog without anything else that makes up a website, then I can see how that would feel isolating.
