Hello castaways, sailors, pirates, and other similar web surfers! I'd love to check in, say hi, hear what's up with you guys. What are you expecting of this place, your current and future online plans, any thoughts you feel like might be relevant. By the way - do you use mostly desktop or mobile to browse forums? I added a shoutbox here, but it's only available in the web version. So I'd like for this thread to be a bit of an alternative chatting space, to get things started and see what everyone's thoughts and expectations are! <3

Hello castaways and cutouts! I was disappointed when I saw the Yesterweb forums would be closing. Exploring sites and projects related to the Yesterweb had been a very invigorating experience. Luckily, I saw Ray's post about this new forum.
I guess that I would hope that this place would be a good place to meet new people, share our creations, and receive tips on navigating online life. My Neocities page is relatively new, but it's getting better all the time.
I mostly use my laptop to browse Neocities.

Hello fellow castaways!
I'm here from the Yesterweb forum as I do intend to keep in touch with the amazing folks I've met. Currently I use forums just on the the computer. Which .. is great. I feel like mobile
devices are another big reason why we are so disconnected.. ironically. They burn me out. Whereas speaking on forums with a full keyboard on a laptop... it feels like a destination again.
Which the early net actually felt like, imo. There is the feeling of actually spending time together person to person.. which made the internet so special. No algorithms.. just people
actually interested in eachother, not funneled here by marketing. It's .. actually refreshing.

Hi! I came here to hang out and keep in touch with some previous yesterfolks I have a lot of projects I want to do one the web, from posting blog posts to creating social web games, but I don't have yet the energy to work on it (soon, I hope!). So in the meantime, if I can help you guys with web stuff or just by being friendly it's gonna be enough for now! I think I also regret a bit to not have been as active on the YW while it was there, maybe you guys can relate to it. That's why I hope to be of a good influence here, even if the space isn't meant to be an end in itself, but more as a starting point for castaways to bounce back. Take care everyone, I'm going back to my night shift tasks o/

Hi! I never ended up posting on the YW forum as much as I intended, but I've been checking in on fairly regularly for a while. Been mulling over the conversations in the "shutting down" thread a bunch, though I'm still trying to gather my thoughts into something coherent. It's made me reflect a lot on the ideas of community, and the effort it takes to maintain one -- and I suppose, maybe given me some inspiration to try something new. I've never made "deep" connections over the web. Primarily because I'm shy, and I tend to overthink interactions / reaching out to people. But that is something I want to work on. But yeah, modern internet culture has never been something I've been able to easily integrate into -- so if we're going to try and make something different, I'm all for it.
As for plans; I'd love to build new creative projects. Meet new friends & jump in more on any conversations about the nature of the internet. See what happens.
To answer your question, I mostly use Desktop to browse forums. Generally not a fan of mobile for anything, only use it when I'm unable to use my laptop.

glad to see we all seemed to keep the same icon as on YW xD i also came here to hang out, chill, etc etc. i'm not one for making online spaces myself (that's a little too complicated for my brain lol), but enjoy hanging out in them and checking out and exploring things other people make!~ also i tend to use my laptop for forums and stuff for essentially the reason oistepanka says, "it feels like a destination again". also also i thoroughly enjoy shoutboxes xD

Hi new friends!
I found this forum through the Yesterweb forum post about the shutdown. I never participated in the yesterweb community. Digitally, as well as in real life, I'm an introverted wallflower and very shy about reaching out. However, as much fun as I'm having with my website, I'm longing for some community so that's what I'm hoping to find here.
I'll use my phone in a pinch but I find using it to access the web to be an intensely aggravating process so I prefer to use my laptop.

Hi hi! I'm here trying to be less of a recluse online. I enjoyed just chilling on YW, i wanna keep doing that! But also, try do things together in some form...? Like, making a website can be pretty solitary. The zines comes to mind, something like that? Idk!!! I'll use my phone in a pinch but I find using it to access the web to be an intensely aggravating process so I prefer to use my laptop. Yeah, pretty much this ^

Welcome on board you lovely peeps! Hello castaways and cutouts! I was disappointed when I saw the Yesterweb forums would be closing. Exploring sites and projects related to the Yesterweb had been a very invigorating experience. Welcome!! What was that you liked best about your experience with the Yesterweb / Yesterweb related stuff? Currently I use forums just on the the computer. Which .. is great. I feel like mobile devices are another big reason why we are so disconnected.. ironically. They burn me out. Whereas speaking on forums with a full keyboard on a laptop... it feels like a destination again. I think I get that, somewhat! Sitting down in a dedicated space to do something makes it so much more intentional, makes you focus your attention on it, means you took time out of your day for that. Still, I mostly check forums on the phone when I have a bit of time here and there to read something on the go. But then I do prefer sitting down at desktop to reply (which is why it took so much to get back at you guys here, since I'm often busy! ) I feel like there's merit to both desktop and mobile, but in either case, being more mindful about how you use the 'net and why is always a great thing <3 What are your wishes and expectations for new web communities? Do feel free to share ideas and projects if you want, even if they won't be realities soon! <3 I too regret not having participated in the YW more tbh. This is probably just going to be a tiny space, but even if this community is going to be super tiny, I hope we can still foster the Manifesto's values and have a good time together! I feel you a lot. I am shy to talk first, and chatty and easygoing when talked to, but I struggle to make and mantain friendships. The internet helped me a lot since I was a kid - in a way, not having to look another person in the eye felt much more comforting, made me bolder. I used to make a lot of friends online as a kid & young teen! I then began to struggle again, and I think the nature of modern social media did make it harder for me. For starters, having an "online presence" makes the stakes higher, for me. If I say something embarassing with a random username, I can forget about it and try again. But if all my accounts are interlinked and connected to my face and name and friends... Hello, anxiety!!! The way the YW changed my relationship to the net helped me a lot with this. And posting in the forum also helped. The discussion in the shutdown thread invigorated me though, and kind of flipped a switch in me. It's like I remembered how fearless I was, talking to people and making friends online back then. It's like -- that's what I owe most to the internet, that's the best thing it did for me. I'm not here to doomscroll, I'm here to make a fool out of myself and hope to gain some friends along the way! <3 For what it's worth: (you, but anyone else as well of course) feel free to make up a completely random username and email/message me to chat anxiety-free at any time. also i tend to use my laptop for forums and stuff for essentially the reason oistepanka says, "it feels like a destination again". also also i thoroughly enjoy shoutboxes xD Welcome!! Shoutboxes are pretty cool as long as the community is small, imo! Like group chats. I wonder if it would do this community good to have a groupchat for fast-paced convos? Hi new friends! I found this forum through the Yesterweb forum post about the shutdown. I never participated in the yesterweb community. Digitally, as well as in real life, I'm an introverted wallflower and very shy about reaching out. However, as much fun as I'm having with my website, I'm longing for some community so that's what I'm hoping to find here. Welcome! <3 I'm glad you decided to join and chat with us! How did you find the Yesterweb/what did you like about it/what YW-related content did you enjoy? (asking out of curiosity!) Hi hi! I'm here trying to be less of a recluse online. I enjoyed just chilling on YW, i wanna keep doing that! But also, try do things together in some form...? Like, making a website can be pretty solitary. The zines comes to mind, something like that? Idk!!! Yeah!!! I think that's what the YW organizers meant when they said they wanted to move away from making websites as the end goal, since that can just alienate people further. I absolutely love personal websites, but they aren't a social activity. Madness suggested something like making a collaborative website along with other people in the shutdown thread, which is such a neat idea I wonder how well we could manage a small project all together like a web zine. Would anyone else be into something like that? It would probably require a significant joint effort, unless someone here wanted to take the burden of management on themselves. Also!!! unrelated, but I love your propic. I always felt like it was really memorable, along with your username :> Well now, I had no ideas guests could posts! I've removed this function, as it could be extremely easy to misuse - but thank you so much anon!! Feel free to join in if you ever feel like it ^^ As for myself - I really want to just. Meet new people. Talk, slowly seek out communities, learn something new. I actually want to slowly reintegrate some "mainstream" social media back in my life, setting aside a limited time for them on desktop only. I feel like I'm missing out on things happening -near me- by opting out of them completely. I feel like the Yesterweb has equipped me with the right tools to be able to have a good and meaningful time, in spite of how they're *supposed* to be used, I guess. And, I do feel like it's possible to be a good influence, to show another way of using the internet. I'm also still interested in personal websites and the Web Revival spaces though!

Welcome!! What was that you liked best about your experience with the Yesterweb / Yesterweb related stuff?I suppose that Neocities and the Yesterweb feel less sterile than other web building sites out there. The deliberate throwback style is probably a big reason why. There's less of a pressure to look professional, but you are encouraged to build an aesthetic that suits you. Another big reason is that the ideals of the Yesterweb and the related sites seem to be focused on helping people. The directory of links on the Yesterweb site is a wonderful collection of open-source projects, educational content, and incredibly helpful online tools.

For starters, having an "online presence" makes the stakes higher, for me. If I say something embarassing with a random username, I can forget about it and try again. But if all my accounts are interlinked and connected to my face and name and friends... Hello, anxiety!!! Oh yeah this is definitely true for me too... I definitely think the thunderdome of conflict & "assume the worst intention"-esc attitude prevalent on a lot of social media makes me hesitant to put much out there at times too. I do endeavor to keep my online / offline lives separate, but on public facing social media, there's always the fact that anything you say can be seen by the general public. Conversations online aren't as ephemeral, there's a patchwork legacy of bits of you scattered on the net... I've always been too hesitant to initiate things -- a lot of my experience of browsing the yesterweb forum was thinking "okay, I'm waiting for someone else to initiate a conversation on the things that I want to talk about, and then I'll join in the discussion more". It's a challenge to shake my mindset of being an observer & transition to being a participant. For what it's worth: (you, but anyone else as well of course) feel free to make up a completely random username and email/message me to chat anxiety-free at any time. And thank you for the offer! The big habit I need to form is reaching out to people so like, an open invitation like this is helpful. Not sure if people are familiar with the website for Yale's school of art (https://www.art.yale.edu/) which is fully collaborative, meaning all students & staff can edit it. But I'd be down for that kind of collaborative web building, or something adjacent. Back in high school, my friends & I often used Google Docs as a sort of hypertextual chatroom, where we'd talk in the docs, add images, links to other docs, move to different parts of the docs to chat... I can imagine a group website of being the sort of thing like that, where you'd check in fairly regularly to see what other people have added, and build out parts of the website in response, expand on the contributions of others. One of my friends & I toyed around with the idea of building out a deep underbelly to our websites that subtly transitioned into each other or some such. But I'd be down for a zine or any kind of collaborative web-art project really.

Everyone editing the same thing seems like a good time... and probably makes for a living thing in a way that a zine isn't (i mean, zines are finished and then you move on). And it would encourage exploring around! I wonder how hard it is to set up? (That yale site looks wonderful btw, thanks for linking). The underbelly idea reminded me i had a similar (maybe) thing in mind a while ago (without the collaborative aspect), but i thought of it as a "basement". Like, some weird un-web-like place underneath the actual thing where the rules were different. It never amounted to anything, but i made concept art of it for some reason ^^ Also!!! unrelated, but I love your propic. I always felt like it was really memorable, along with your username :> Thank you, and same! They look so happy and curious... ^^
