I just heard about a thing some scammers have started to do. They’ve started to get profiles of a victim’s loves ones, and call them using an AI mimicking their voice to get them to give out credit card information, among other things. Feels like we’re beginning to live in a dystopia, like this genuinely terrifies me, because I fear this is just the start… For now, there are ways to avoid it, which is a relief. One interesting bit I noticed is that it advises you to delete your social media or at least make it private, which must mean that’s where the scammers are getting the information they need. What do you guys make of this?

I find it interesting that the tips given for counteracting such scams are essentially... 1. keep your private information off of social media 2. be involved in the lives of your loved ones so that you generally know how they are doing 3. when confronted with a high stress situation, do not react immediately, but assess it carefully ...and that all of this is just "good advice" in general. Now, for the technology itself... Imagine training A.I. on as much of the scientific data that has been accumulated over the past hundred years as possible in order to look for breakthroughs in healing diseases, repairing the ecology of the Earth, and other life-affirming purposes instead of terrorizing each other? How quickly could we turn around all of society for the better? "Are you afraid?" "No. When I am, I will master my fear."

How quickly could we turn around all of society for the better? That reminds me of when I visited the torture museum in San Marino. They knew about things like the location of specific nerves, pressure points and vital organs centuries ago, but instead of using it to better medicine and treating people, they decide to use it to torture people and make them die as painfully as possible. It’s really fucked up, interesting, but fucked up. To a lesser extent, AI is like this now. AI can be used for many great things that can genuinely improve society, but instead people just seem to be using it in the scummiest ways possible.

It is awful when people abuse knowledge by using it to be more cunning in harming others. I have dwelled much on the darkness of humanity with the hope of helping to heal it in some small measure. Eventually, I came to the conclusion that while we may not be able to control what others do, we can provide support to those that need it and give a few examples of how do something constructive instead. And not just with A.I., in all things. I appreciate that your immediate reaction was to not only point out the problem, but also to share ways that we could avoid it. Bit by bit, the world becomes a better place in every decision that we make that is motivated by kindness and consideration.

Figured I’d share this here, people have started to use the technology to imitate famous people like Joe Rogan and Mr. Beast to scam people.

Today, I saw a Twitter post warning people to use the robots.txt file on their sites to block ChatGPT's crawler.
I hadn't thought to add a robots.txt file. Figured I'd ask about other webbuilders experiences with them.

Figured I’d share this here, people have started to use the technology to imitate famous people like Joe Rogan and Mr. Beast to scam people. The Mr. Beast scam video feels similar to the endless hordes of YouTube comments that mimic popular accounts and try to get people to text their personal information over Telegram...On a happier note, hearing Moist sing Big Iron is surreal. Haha! Today, I saw a Twitter post warning people to use the robots.txt file on their sites to block ChatGPT's crawler. I hadn't thought to add a robots.txt file. Figured I'd ask about other webbuilders experiences with them. Several good articles and threads have been shared on both 32-Bit Cafe and Melonland about these topics fairly recently... ...Maybe we should start a new thread in the Resources subforum to share these kinds of links?

I found some resources online. I'll make a new thread about this.

Posting this here because I think it’s related and imo, not worth making a new thread over when we have this. People made AI porn of Taylor Swift and the US is looking into heavily regulating AI content. MoistKr1Tikal goes a good job explaining why using AI like this is a problem.
