okay, so uh i don't know how much i'd actually be able to physically or meaningfully contribute to something like this. but i miss districts of neocities, man. i kinda super don't like the way that neocities bumps The Most Popular Sites first and foremost no matter what. and i really would like some kind of remade districts site. i don't really know the specifics of what happened to the og districts of neocities, but like apparently the guy running it was a bit cringe.
anyways, something like what they did where each site is categorized into different topics and they're alphabetized and that good stuff. they can put the button that corresponds to their particular district and it would be nice i think.

I'm relatively new to Neocities, but I do follow a site called Neo-Neighborhoods (neo-neighborhoods.neocities.org). It puts websites into categories (or "neighborhoods") to help users find the kind of sites they want to find.

I was just discussing this on Blue Dwarf, where someone linked part of an interview with David Bohnett. He pointed out that when founding GeoCities, it was important to him that part of the process of signing up was "picking a neighbourhood" where you wanted to "live" based on what you were interested in, so that part of being a creator on GeoCities was being conscious of the sharedness of those interests. (The "cities," presumably.)
It dawned on me that Neocities was patterned closely after GeoCities, but it completely dropped the ball in that area. Neocities districts are still possible and might be good if someone can resurrect them, but I doubt they'll ever be what they were for GeoCities unless they're implemented natively.

i'm gonna be so real and honest with you i had no idea that neo-neighborhoods was even a thing that existed (again i'm sure this is due in part to the flaw neocities has in how it promotes websites on its front page) !! it should definitely be talked about more i think to more people can, like, congregate, y'know?

While I have a huge amount of respect for Kyle's efforts, I feel like some aspects of Neocities (particularly the site sorting and block functions) do not always work as intended. That said, I have never looked at the source code to actually check how it all works, or could necessarily do anything with that knowledge even if I did. But the information is there if someone would like to try to make a Neocities clone with Geocities-like neighborhoods baked in. Personally, I was always confused as to how to categorize sites that cover a broad range of topics when using such a system. Maybe sorting into categories wouldn't matter if there were more search options beyond "tags" and the pre-existing "sort by" filters? The bottom of the "Websites" section of Neocities also allows one to search through the text of Neocities websites using DuckDuckGo...now only if it could list all of the sites as text links instead of images of the homepages...
