Is there hype about this project on mainstream social medias? I don't know - I personally don't care too much for what I've read so far / I'm not too optimistic. It's a free social media app that, by the way it describes itself, wants to be a twitter-like social. I am skeptic about how it will be able to afford to stay up without selling user data for targeted advertisements, or eventually filling the website to the brim with ads. I'm also skeptical that any twitter clone can be a better place than twitter just because they vow to moderate it better. Not only because it's going to be a lot of really hard work to moderate it. Even progressive, left wing, socially conscious twitter spaces are a mess - when the nature of an app is to foster drama for engagement, you don't need more moderation, you need a cultural shift from its userbase. I don't see it wanting to foster something like that, and so I have no high hopes for it being a less toxic social media by virtue of banning bigots. I also saw several other apps being hyped on twitter after Musk's acquisition, and we don't talk about them at all. Who remembers Hive? it takes a lot to get your social media out there - if their friends aren't already on it, many people will have no interest in joining. So you have to convince a lot of people to sign up for you upfront. What do you think about it? Am I being too critical? ^^

Its like on the TV Realm about Twitch, Odysee, Peertube, Dailymotion, Vimeo are supposed to be the next Youtube though. Or Here Mastodon and Tumblr were supposed to get some of the Twitter users.

I totally agree with you both! At the same time I'm glad people are hyped about alternative platform, and that people still want to create them; for me it's a good sign that they want to get some fresh air outside of the 4-5 social media they are used to (or see screenshot of reposted). The majority of the new platform won't (maybe just can't) solve the fundamentals issues with social media (engagement incentive, network effect, silo, monetization...), but I'm happy that some people continue to try to experiment with alternative.
It maybe is too optimistic on my part!
(I almost laugh at the mention of Hive, it really was gone as fast as it went)

In terms of twitter alternatives, I've found myself still using cohost fairly regularly --> though specifically rather than branding themselves as a twitter alternative, they always say they're a "fourth website", not meant to replace, just to be something else. There's a lot of effort to mitigate negative patterns emblematic on twitter and other sites -- rechosts, likes, follower counts, etc. are all hidden, etc.
However, today there was a lot of discourse about whether or not itch.io restricting the payout method for some creators is a sign of itch.io moving to be less hospitable to NSFW content, and I saw some pretty aggressive back-and-forth arguments and whatnot. And it got me thinking that even though the site has a lot of structural improvements I can get behind, the kinds of cultural problems that develop on twitter-like spaces aren't easily reversed, even after jumping platforms. Indirectly I hear about all this messiness on mastodon between instance drama and blocklists and all sorts of stuff, too.
So I also agree with nighten in that I don't think a new platform can really fix anything, but I do nevertheless enjoy the fact that people are trying new things.

Oh I didn't know about the issue with itch.io; sadly it's not really in the control of the admin, any website is almost destined to restrict NSFW if they still want the favor of payment processor and/or advertiser; even OnlyFans will probably be forced to shift at some point. Sarah Z talk about it in one of the chapter of her last video if you are curious on the subject -> youtube.com/watch?v=3WSKKolgL2UMastodon is honestly one of the most promising alternative in my opinion, it hides stats on posts for example, and most importantly it's in active development by volunteer and don't need to monetize by advertisement, although it's clearly not free for instance runners. There is some drama and debate for sure (I remember back in ~2017 the witch.town debacle, where in a very short time an important queer instance shut down and its admin was cancelled), but it's not omnipresent like twitter's "villain of the day", and I met some great people over there. It's clearly not perfect, but the activity pub protocol as a whole is worth looking into; other social media run on the same "network" basically, which mean there are more than just mastodon to discover (blogging platform, Instagram clones, youtube alternative...) I don't know much about cohost but it looks cool as well
